A report from the American Association for Regional Planning shows that New York City buses and taxis have increased the speed of buses and taxis on Manhattan's busiest streets after the implementation of a controversial congestion charge plan. The program charges drivers entering central Manhattan. Currently, most passenger cars pay $9 to enter the area south of 60th Street during peak hours, while vans pay more depending on size. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is responsible for operating the city's transportation network and enforcing fees, said the tariff has helped reduce traffic by about 11%. According to an RPA report released on Monday, the average speed of taxi trips departing or ending south of 60th Street from January to October last year was 7.3 miles per hour, an increase of 1.4% over the same period in 2024. This reverses the trend of recent years, as the average speed of taxis has been declining since 2021. According to MTA data, congestion charges are expected to bring in net revenue of US$548.3 million in 2025, which will help modernize its aging transportation network.
