We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. For example, the LOT VACUUM Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:083310), share price is up over the last year, but its gain of 46% trails the market return. Having said that, the longer term returns aren't so impressive, with stock gaining just 11% in three years.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year LOT VACUUM saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop below zero. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so we would not have expected to see the share price up. It may be that the company has done well on other metrics.

We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.5% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. LOT VACUUM's revenue actually dropped 20% over last year. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

A Different Perspective

LOT VACUUM shareholders are up 46% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 5% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand LOT VACUUM better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with LOT VACUUM (at least 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
