Insiders were net sellers of Tri Pointe Homes, Inc.'s (NYSE:TPH ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Tri Pointe Homes Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO & Non-Independent Director, Douglas Bauer, for US$3.6m worth of shares, at about US$30.15 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$31.47. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 14% of Douglas Bauer's holding. Douglas Bauer was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership Of Tri Pointe Homes

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Tri Pointe Homes insiders own 2.8% of the company, worth about US$76m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
