If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at Infosys' (NSE:INFY) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Infosys:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.32 = US$4.2b ÷ (US$18b - US$5.2b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).

So, Infosys has an ROCE of 32%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 17% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Can We Tell From Infosys' ROCE Trend?

It's hard not to be impressed by Infosys' returns on capital. The company has consistently earned 32% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 22% in that time. With returns that high, it's great that the business can continually reinvest its money at such appealing rates of return. If Infosys can keep this up, we'd be very optimistic about its future.

In Conclusion...

In summary, we're delighted to see that Infosys has been compounding returns by reinvesting at consistently high rates of return, as these are common traits of a multi-bagger. And since the stock has risen strongly over the last five years, it appears the market might expect this trend to continue. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
