According to Chengdu's announcement, the “Administrative Measures on Approval of Names of Residential Areas and Buildings with Important Geographical Location in Chengdu” was officially issued recently. The “Measures” state that it is prohibited to use deliberately exaggerated terms such as “all nations,” “the universe,” “the world,” “central China,” and “Europe,” and generally do not use terms with “China,” “China,” “the whole country,” “international,” and “the world.” Prohibit common names; do not use common names in administrative divisions, common names in other geographical name categories, and common names that are prone to confusion; prohibit or restrict the use of common names, such as “certain garden square”; use standardized Chinese characters, avoid unusual characters, and prohibit traditional characters, alternative characters, self-made characters, Arabic numbers and punctuation; implement negative lists to clearly establish a negative list system for naming and renaming residential areas and buildings, and prohibit or restrict the use of names on the list. Names not on the list must also comply with the principles of clear meaning, health, and compatibility with the name.
