5paisa Capital's (NSE:5PAISA) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock jumps 11% this past week

5paisa Capital Limited (NSE:5PAISA) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 11% in the last week. But that is minimal compensation for the share price under-performance over the last year. In fact, the price has declined 28% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

While the stock has risen 11% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unfortunately 5paisa Capital reported an EPS drop of 25% for the last year. We note that the 28% share price drop is very close to the EPS drop. Given the lower EPS we might have expected investors to lose confidence in the stock, but that doesn't seemed to have happened. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

Investors in 5paisa Capital had a tough year, with a total loss of 28%, against a market gain of about 4.8%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 1.9%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
