After US President Trump appointed a US special envoy to Greenland and reaffirmed the US side's position, the three Nordic countries Norway, Finland, and Sweden made separate statements of solidarity with neighboring Denmark on the 22nd. Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Waltonen said in a social media platform on the same day, “It is clear that matters relating to Denmark and Greenland should be decided by Denmark and Greenland themselves.” She also pointed out that Denmark has always been America's “staunch ally” on the Afghanistan and Iraq issues, suffered heavy losses in participating in US military operations, and faced the threat of terrorism as a result. Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmö Steinergaard also expressed support for Denmark on the same day. She said that matters relating to Denmark and Greenland should be decided by both parties, and that Sweden “fully supports its neighbors” and will always uphold international law. She emphasized that respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity is a basic principle of international law. Also, according to a report by Norwegian News Agency on the 22nd, Norwegian Foreign Minister Eide said in a statement on the same day, “Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. We fully support the Danish Government's position on this matter”.
