The Malaysian High Court ruled on the 22nd to reject former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib's application to change his prison sentence to home confinement, requiring him to continue serving his sentence in prison. Najib appealed in April 2024, arguing that in accordance with the relevant amnesty decisions of former Supreme Head of State Abdullah Ahmed Shah, he applied to complete the remaining period of his sentence by confinement at home. The Malaysian High Court's ruling is the result of handling this appeal. Malaysian High Court Judge Lu Yiqing said on the same day that additional materials submitted by Najib to support his appeal were not valid, so he requested that Najib continue to serve his sentence in prison. Najib served as Prime Minister of Malaysia from 2009 to 2018. After taking office, he set up a sovereign investment fund called “One Malaysian Development Company”. In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that Najib was convicted on 7 counts of misappropriation of public funds and money laundering in the case of SRC International, a former subsidiary of “Yima”, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison and a fine of 210 million ringgit. Najib appealed to the Court of Appeals, which was rejected in December 2021. In August 2022, the Federal Court of Malaysia upheld the original ruling in a final instance, making Najib the first Malaysian former prime minister to serve a prison sentence. In February 2024, the Amnesty Authority Secretariat of the Federal Territory of Malaysia announced that Najib's prison sentence would be reduced to 6 years and the fine would be reduced to 50 million ringgit.
