The Zhitong Finance App has learned that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority today (December 19) released statistics on payment cards issued in Hong Kong for the third quarter of 2025. According to quarterly statistics, at the end of the third quarter of 2025, the total number of credit cards in circulation was 2.58 million, up 10.0% month-on-month and 23.6% year-on-year. The volume and amount of credit card transactions (including retail sales and cash loans) are easily affected by seasonal factors and the overall economic environment, and trends fluctuate. In the third quarter of 2025, the total number of credit card transactions was 382.61 million, up 6.2% from the previous quarter and 16.3% from the same period in 2024. The total amount of credit card transactions in the third quarter of 2025 was HK$285.6 billion, up 6.4% from the previous quarter and 14.8% compared with the same period in 2024. Of the total transaction amount, HK$173.3 billion (60.7%) was spent in Hong Kong, HK$103.1 billion (36.1%) was spent overseas, and HK$9.1 billion (3.2%) was cash loans.
