Hong Kong's overall GDP in the third quarter increased by 3.8% year-on-year in real terms

The Zhitong Finance App learned that on December 18, the Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released preliminary figures on GDP by economic activity for the third quarter of 2025 based on month-on-month volume calculation. According to preliminary statistics, Hong Kong's overall GDP rose by 3.8% in real terms in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, while the increase in the second quarter was 3.1%.

According to the analysis of the constituent service industry and comparison with the same period last year, the total added value of all service activities actually increased by 3.1% in the third quarter of 2025, while the increase in the second quarter was 3.4%.

The value added of import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade increased by 5.1% in real terms in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the same period of the previous year, while the increase in the second quarter was 6.1%.

The value added of the accommodation and food service sector actually declined by 1.3% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the same period of the previous year, while the decline in the second quarter was 0.6%.

The added value of transportation, warehousing, postal and courier services actually increased by 2.3% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the same period of the previous year, while the increase in the second quarter was 5.5%.

The value added in the information and communications industry remained essentially unchanged in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, while the increase in the second quarter was 0.4%.

The value added in the finance and insurance sector actually increased by 5.4% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the same period of the previous year, which is roughly the same as the increase in the second quarter.

The added value of the real estate, professional and commercial services sector recorded a real increase of 0.4% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the same period of the previous year, while the decline in the second quarter was 0.7%.

The value added of public administration, social and personal services increased by 1.9% in real terms in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, while the increase in the second quarter was 2.3%.

As far as industries other than the service industry are concerned, the value added of the local manufacturing industry actually increased by 5.4% in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, while the increase in the second quarter was 0.9%.

The added value of the electricity, gas and tap water supply and waste management industries actually declined by 0.9% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the same period of the previous year, and increased by 0.4% in the second quarter.

The added value of the construction industry fell 7.0% in the third quarter after a 10.4% real decline in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
