According to a press release from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the Centre for Food Safety of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today that in response to separate notifications from the World Organization for Animal Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks in parts of France and South Korea, as well as an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, the Centre immediately instructed the industry to suspend imports of poultry meat and poultry products from the relevant regions to protect public health in Hong Kong.
