Recently, another scandal came to light in Japanese politics. Many branches of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party used political funds for consumption in bars and other entertainment venues, triggering questions from Japanese public opinion. According to the political fund income and expenditure report, at least five branches of the Liberal Democratic Party have used political funds to pay for entertainment venues such as bars and nightclubs. The locations are Mie Prefecture, Osaka Prefecture, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Nagasaki Prefecture, and Kagoshima Prefecture. In 2023, such expenses totaled about 1.11 million yen, or about 50,000 yuan. However, according to relevant regulations, the Liberal Democratic Party branch spent less than 50,000 yen on a single political fund, which is about 2,264 yuan, and there is no need to record it, so the actual total amount of political funds suspected of improper use may be higher. Faced with questions, the Liberal Democratic Party's Osaka branch argued that the relevant expenses were “intended to create a smooth communication atmosphere.” Branch offices in Mie Prefecture and Nagasaki Prefecture said they would strengthen management.
