The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on December 12, condemning the recent forcible seizure of an oil tanker by the US military in international waters near Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea, pointing out that this move was a further escalation of America's economic war against Cuba. The statement pointed out that the US seizure of a Venezuelan tanker was an “act of piracy” and an “act of maritime terrorism” and seriously violates international law norms such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the “Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Endangering the Safety of Maritime Navigation”, and the US government bears full responsibility for this. The statement said that the current US military action is an escalation of a series of actions by the US to prevent Venezuela from freely trading natural resources with other countries. The purpose is to cut off Venezuela's oil supply to Cuba. As early as 2019, the US took similar measures to hinder the Venezuelan oil trade and interfered with ships carrying fuel to Cuba.
