Statistics South Africa released a report on the 11th saying that since 2006, South Africa has made remarkable progress in reducing poverty. The national poverty rate has declined markedly, reducing the number of people living in poverty by more than 4 million in 17 years. According to the report “Poverty Trends in South Africa: An Examination of Absolute Poverty Situation from 2006 to 2023” published by Statistics South Africa, as measured by relevant standards, the proportion of people below the poverty line in South Africa fell to 37.9% in 2023, and the proportion of people living in extreme poverty fell to 17.6% from 27.4% in 2006. The report also points out that there is a large relationship between the level of education and the state of poverty, and that there are more undereducated people among the poor. Statistics South Africa said that continued investment in social security, job creation, education and financial support is achieving tangible results in poverty reduction efforts.
