While it’s been a great week for Gray Media, Inc. (NYSE:GTN) shareholders after stock gained 13%, company insiders might have missed out on those gains after selling stock earlier this year. The return on their investment would have been much higher had they held on to their stock.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Gray Media

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, Richard Boger, sold US$116k worth of shares at a price of US$5.82 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$5.26). So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

In total, Gray Media insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Gray Media insiders own 15% of the company, worth about US$80m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
