There's No Escaping Nutun Limited's (JSE:NTU) Muted Revenues Despite A 31% Share Price Rise

Nutun Limited (JSE:NTU) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 31% after a shaky period beforehand. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 56% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, Nutun may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Professional Services industry in South Africa have P/S ratios greater than 1.3x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Nutun's Recent Performance Look Like?

For instance, Nutun's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Nutun will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

How Is Nutun's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Nutun would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 2.8%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 93% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 7.0% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this in mind, we understand why Nutun's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Nutun's P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Nutun's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Nutun revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
