Jim Bianco, President and Macro Strategist at Bianco Research, said Texas’ governor result could have major implications, because the state’s political shift intersects with its central role in data-center expansion.
Bianco took to X early Wednesday and identified Democrat Gina Hinojosa winning Texas’ governorship for the first time in decades as the "biggest news” from election night for markets, considering the state is set to host 25% of all data centers coming online between now and 2030.
However, the strategist noted that Republicans still control both chambers of the Texas Legislature.
He pointed to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s Sept. 21 moratorium on data-center construction. Bianco said the expectation was that Abbott would win and remove the restriction, while the concern is that it may remain.
The issue has implications for companies building or financing AI infrastructure, as Texas’ role in future capacity makes permitting and construction policy particularly significant.
The election outcome, including Democrat Gina Hinojosa’s victory over Abbott, has fueled concerns about delays to planned capacity. Brad Gerstner warned that 10–15 gigawatts of the 43 gigawatts of new capacity expected in 2027 may not come online, potentially straining AI infrastructure growth.
He said Democratic gains could increase regulatory hurdles for data-center construction, particularly in Texas, but stressed that the U.S. would not abandon the global AI race. He expects markets to remain volatile in the near term.
The political uncertainty also reaches Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX), whose AI-related ambitions have drawn scrutiny. Grant Cardone warned that James Talarico’s Texas Senate victory could create challenges for SpaceX, citing the Democrat’s proposals to make AI data centers fund their own infrastructure, reduce pollution and water use, strengthen grid and environmental standards, and establish an AI dividend.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk renewed his push for space-based AI data centers after Democrat Gina Hinojosa’s win in Texas. Hinojosa’s proposed restrictions on new data-center construction have raised concerns about AI infrastructure development, prompting Musk to remark that "data centers in space" were looking increasingly appealing.
