AI may help manufacturers preserve expertise as veteran engineers retire, Vertex Ventures says

• AI could help manufacturers preserve retiring engineers’ expertise as a shortage of new talent threatens production capabilities.
• Replacing one veteran can require two to three engineers, without guaranteeing equivalent performance.
• Change management, downtime risks and production-data security pose greater adoption barriers than technology budgets.
• Viable systems must run in-house on existing infrastructure, with engineers retaining decision-making authority.
• Initial deployments should target a single production line, demonstrating measurable returns through higher yields, reduced scrap or less downtime.
