Applied Digital Corp (NASDAQ:APLD) stock gained in early trading Monday. The move appears more consistent with a rebound after Friday’s sell-off than with a verified new company-specific catalyst.
The wider market also moved higher. Nasdaq futures rose 1.33%, and S&P 500 futures gained 0.55%.
On Friday, stocks of semiconductor and chip companies traded lower as rising inflation concerns and elevated energy prices raised expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes.
Higher borrowing costs could pressure semiconductor manufacturing and AI infrastructure investments, and strain customer budgets.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX), which tracks chip companies, has declined for seven consecutive trading sessions. That matches its longest losing streak since the 2008 financial crisis, according to Benzinga Pro.
Morgan Stanley maintained an Equal-Weight rating on APLD and raised its price forecast to $41 on Oct. 12. Wells Fargo maintained an Overweight rating and raised its forecast to $55 on Oct. 8. Freedom Capital Markets maintained a Buy rating with a $48 target on Oct. 8.
According to Benzinga, 16 analysts have a consensus Buy rating on APLD: two Strong Buys, 13 Buys and one Hold. The average price forecast is $42, which implies 114.9% upside.
APLD is still in a clear longer-term downtrend: at $19.45, it’s trading 20% below its 20-day SMA ($24.35), 25.6% below its 50-day SMA ($26.17), and roughly 39% below its 200-day SMA ($31.99).
Momentum is the bigger story right now, with RSI at 25.64—deep in oversold territory—suggesting selling pressure has been stretched, and the stock is more prone to sharp snapback rallies than clean, steady uptrends. The bearish backdrop is reinforced by the “death cross” that formed in August (the 50-day SMA below the 200-day SMA), which often keeps longer-term sellers active on strength.
From a structure standpoint, the stock is hovering just above its 52-week low of $18.36, after putting in a recent swing low in October.
APLD Price Action: Applied Digital shares were up 8.45% at $19.57 at the time of publication on Monday. The stock is near its 52-week low of $18.36, according to Benzinga Pro data.
