On a per-share basis, the Boston-based company said it had net income of $2.56. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $4.76 per share.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $4.92 per share.

The drugmaker posted revenue of $3.44 billion in the period, beating Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.4 billion.

Vertex expects full-year revenue in the range of $13.15 billion to $13.25 billion.
