The Call Veeco Instruments Bulls Got Right

If you had been weighing Veeco Instruments on 1 January 2026, the debate was already sharp over whether AI equipment demand would offset customer concentration, China exposure and merger execution risk. Investors who held Veeco Instruments from the start of the year are up 27.3%, including dividends. With big Indium Phosphide laser orders now on the tape and the Axcelis tie-up moving forward, which of those early concerns still look material and which look mispriced?

This theme extends beyond Veeco Instruments. See which of 54 AI infrastructure stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Stories Investors Were Weighing On Veeco Instruments

The shares cost US$28.58 at the start, and the argument around Veeco Instruments was whether AI hardware and electrification could really turn it into a steadier compounder or if customer and policy risks would keep it on a short leash.

The bullish narrative pointed to a Fair Value of US$30.54, the price implied if its assumptions played out. This view was built on AI and digitization driving strong demand for NSA and IBD tools, along with multiple US$30 million to US$60 million follow on orders.

The cautious view used a Fair Value of US$27.05 as its implied price. It focused on concentrated exposure to China and a small group of large chipmakers, whose spending cuts or policy headwinds could disrupt orders and squeeze margins.

What The Evidence Did To The Veeco Instruments Debate

Veeco Instruments landed more than US$250 million of Indium Phosphide equipment orders for AI and data center uses, which supported the optimistic view that AI hardware demand could underpin larger, multi tool commitments. At the same time, Q1 2026 results included a small loss and weaker China sales, while Q2 2026 net margin slipped to 6.1%. The evidence cut both ways.

The key assumption here was that AI driven orders would translate into healthier, more resilient profitability. For other equipment suppliers, you would test that same claim by tracking backlog quality and the direction of net margin rather than headline contract size alone.

What Veeco Instruments' Latest Price Already Assumes

Veeco Instruments now trades at US$38.87, with this year’s gain leaving buyers paying up for an AI and photonics build out that is already partially evidenced in equipment orders and capacity plans.

The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits above the current price and leans on the idea that today’s level still does not fully credit successful scaling of advanced packaging and photonics alongside the Axcelis merger.

"Ongoing AI and high performance computing build outs are feeding multi year demand for Veeco Instruments annealing and advanced packaging tools, with management pointing to served markets that they size at about US$1.3b for annealing and about US$1b for advanced packaging by 2030, which directly targets future equipment revenue and earnings."
