SPX Technologies walked into this Q3 2026 report with a bruised chart, down over 27% across the past three months, and the latest session shaved off another 4.4% to about US$160. That reaction runs directly against the headline. Revenue reached US$714.5m and basic earnings per share came in at US$1.64 for the quarter, both solid figures for an industrial focused on heating, ventilation and air conditioning and detection equipment.

SPX Technologies: AI Cooling Story Faces The Numbers

The bullish story on SPX Technologies is that AI data centers have structurally rewired demand toward its HVAC equipment and that this orders surge is already locked in.

"Its HVAC backlog, the confirmed, contracted, not-yet-delivered future revenue sitting on the books, grew 59% organically in a single year, to $919 million. That's not a hopeful projection. That's money already spoken for."

Q3 keeps that thesis alive. HVAC revenue climbed strongly, organic growth was double digit, and HVAC backlog advanced to roughly US$1.1b. Management also lifted full year revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance again. The catch is that segment income is not scaling as fast as sales, with HVAC margin contracting about 140 bps as capacity buildout costs and higher inputs bite into profitability.

SPX Technologies: Execution Risks Temper The AI Upside

The bear argument is that SPX Technologies is stretching itself with acquisitions and uneven segments while near term profitability is under pressure.

"Also worth noticing: five acquisitions in about eighteen months. Crawford, Thermolec, KTS, Sigma & Omega, and now Neptronic. Acquired growth is still growth, but it's a different animal from the organic kind, and it's why leverage has roughly doubled on a pro forma basis, from 0.7x to 1.4x."

Leverage has stepped up further, to roughly 1.8x, as the firm continues to buy HVAC and water assets, including FIS Water. HVAC margins compressed again due to ramp costs and inflation, so the feared earnings drag is visible. On the other hand, Detection & Measurement margins improved by about 260 bps and backlog there inched up sequentially, which softens the diversification risk but does not remove it.
