Spin Master (TSX:TOY) Stock Faces Q3 Earnings Value Gap

语音播报

Spin Master stock closed at CA$20.44 on Friday, only fractionally changed over the past month, even as the toymaker dropped a hefty Q3 2026 update that sharpened the picture around profits and value. The headline this quarter is not the holiday setup or a one off movie bump. It is the strain between a still loss making trailing twelve month earnings line and a share price that trades at about 0.7x sales, well below leisure peers and a discounted cash flow estimate near CA$40.32. Short term noise, long term valuation question.

We like the discounted P/S and DCF upside case on Spin Master, but we are uneasy about its earnings line, which is still loss making. Check it against our 3 high quality undervalued stocks to see how it compares on quality and balance sheet strength.

Q3 2026 Earnings Summary

  • Revenue (Q3 2026 vs. Q3 2025): US$732.7 million vs. US$734.7 million (broadly flat year on year)
  • Net Income (Q3 2026 vs. Q3 2025): US$79.0 million profit vs. US$106.8 million profit (results declined year on year)
  • Basic EPS (Q3 2026 vs. Q3 2025): US$0.79 per share vs. US$1.06 per share (earnings per share fell year on year)
  • Trailing 12-Month Net Income (TTM to Q3 2026 vs. TTM to Q3 2025): loss of US$107.6 million vs. profit of US$56.9 million (swung from profit to loss over the past year)

Earnings tell one story, but cash generation often gives valuation focused investors a very different lens on Spin Master. When you line up Spin Master's cash flows against the current share price, the stock could be a striking 49% undervalued.

Evaluating Spin Master’s Multi-Platform Upside

The bullish script hinges on Spin Master turning hit brands and digital IP into a richer, more predictable mix of earnings.

"Bullish analysts expect Spin Master to build on recent toy, entertainment, and digital momentum, with multi-platform IP and adult-skewing categories gradually shifting the earnings mix toward higher margin and more recurring revenue streams."

Q3 results give that idea some real traction. PAW Patrol toys grew 26% with The Dino Movie lifting both licensing and content revenue. Toca Boca World revenue rose 13% despite lapping one time licensing, and Melissa & Doug expanded 10%. Entertainment amortization pulled IFRS profit down, yet operating cash flow more than doubled year to date and net leverage held at about 0.8x, so the cash engine behind this IP push is moving in the right direction.

Spin Master Bear Case: Engagement Risks Still Unproven

Bearish investors have argued that Spin Master’s heavier tilt toward licensed IP and new franchises could leave results exposed if engagement fades or partners underperform.

"Even with multi year licensing agreements such as the expanded Universal plush deal and the Jurassic World preschool line that are expected to support future toy and licensing revenue, heavier dependence on a pipeline of licensed content increases exposure to underperforming releases and potential pressure on gross margin if royalty and production costs are not matched by consumer demand."

The latest quarter does not yet pressure test this concern. PAW Patrol, Universal preschool extensions and early Hellbreak setup all lean positive, and gross profit before D&A held steady. The strain shows elsewhere. Trailing 12 month earnings moved into a loss, IFRS income was hit by amortization and impairments, and digital revenue slipped once last year’s one time licensing is stripped out. That mix means the feared margin squeeze from weaker partners has not appeared, while the broader earnings quality question from higher fixed content costs remains very much alive.

Hunt For Quiet Mispricings

Spin Master just showed how a detailed quarter can still leave a valuation puzzle hanging in the air. The real opportunity could be spotting stocks that look mispriced before fresh information closes the gap.

  • Company 1 - 46% below our estimate - uses premium mall expansion and enhanced online tools to deepen repeat omnichannel spending.
  • Company 2 - 35% below our estimate - folds acquired engineering teams into long duration infrastructure and water programs that build fee based design backlogs.
  • Company 3 - 21% below our estimate - ties specialized aircraft electronics to aftermarket software and a new production facility to secure aerospace contracts.

That is three of the list. See the full list of 3 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
