Reed Hastings Could Get Richer From Anthropic IPO: Here's How Many Shares Netflix Co-Founder Owns

Reed Hastings may not be a household name, but he founded a company used by millions worldwide.

The Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) co-founder previously served as CEO and chairman of the streaming company that he helped create in 1997. No longer involved in Netflix’s day-to-day, Hastings is now helping Anthropic (NASDAQ:ANT), the AI company set to go public.

Here’s what Hastings does at Anthropic and how the IPO could help boost his net worth.

Reed Hastings Now at Anthropic

Anthropic filed its S1 Monday, which includes financials and key details for the AI company ahead of a highly anticipated IPO.

The filing also disclosed board compensation and how many shares directors own.

Hastings has served on Anthropic’s board of directors since May 2025.

"We believe that Mr. Hastings is qualified to serve as a member of our board of directors because of his extensive board experience at major technology companies, his demonstrated commitment to responsible innovation and its societal impact, his deep understanding of technology’s transformative potential, and his philanthropic focus on education and AI’s impact on humanity," the Anthropic S1 reads.

Hastings also serves as the Lead Independent Director for Anthropic, which means he presides over meetings and serves a liaison between the company’s chairperson and the independent directors.

According to the S1, Hastings currently owns 9,410 Class A shares of Anthropic. It is currently unknown what price Anthropic will set for its shares in the IPO, with estimates suggesting a likely market capitalization of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion.

Hastings’ stake is significantly smaller than CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei‘s, who owns 240,637,980 Class A shares of Anthropic.

However, Hastings is set to earn more shares as he serves on the board. Hastings took no compensation for services in 2025, but will receive at least $100,000 in annual compensation moving forward. The amount increases depending on other committee assignments.

Hastings will also begin receiving shares as compensation in 2027, which could be incredibly valuable given the high valuation placed on Anthropic ahead of its IPO.

Reed Hastings Net Worth

Hastings is currently worth $4.2 billion, according to data from Forbes, which ranks him 1,004th in the world. This valuation is based mostly on his now-less-than-1 % stake in Netflix.

The Netflix co-founder owns 21.16 million Netflix shares and about 16 million potential shares from options.

Hastings has sold Netflix stock in recent years and may continue to do so as he is less connected to the company he founded.

The Anthropic shares owned by Hastings could increase the net worth of Hastings depending on what value they are currently estimated at. The shares will also become more liquid over time, depending on any lockup arrangements, since the stock is harder for Hastings to sell right now.
