Meta Platforms came into this Q3 2026 report on a high, with the stock up over the past three months and trading at a premium P/E to its broader industry. The headline update then hit the market hard. Shares dropped about 7% in the first session after results.
The numbers tell a more nuanced story. Revenue reached US$64.6b while net income landed at US$9.9b, leaving basic earnings per share at US$3.86 after a heavy legal charge and rising artificial intelligence infrastructure costs. That gap between rapid top line momentum and squeezed profitability is what investors now have to price.

Ask Charlie what Meta promised for Muse’s path to profit.
Optimists argue Meta Platforms can use its dominant ad engine to fund a second growth pillar in enterprise and AI agents like Muse.
"WhatsApp paid messaging crossed a $2 billion annual run rate in Q4 2025. That's significant. It proves Meta can extract enterprise software revenue from a consumer platform, a trick that has eluded nearly every social media company in history."
Q3 keeps that idea alive. Family of Apps ad revenue of US$63.1b grew 26%, with a 14% price per ad uplift and higher engagement. Muse already has more than 10m setups and meaningful shopping activity, and Family of Apps other revenue is expanding, although still small beside ad dollars.
The sceptical view is that Meta Platforms is over committing to AI spend and legal exposure, turning a strong franchise into a funding source for open ended projects.
"But you can't look at these numbers in isolation, because the man running the place has decided to set $135 billion on fire in 2026 to chase a technology that may or may not work. That's the intellectual problem."
Q3 leans toward that worry. Expenses climbed 68% on a US$9.9b legal charge and heavier AI infrastructure costs. CapEx guidance rose again to a range of US$135b to US$145b. Free cash flow turned negative and the stock fell about 7%, showing investors are treating the AI build and mounting youth safety liabilities as real financial constraints, not background noise.
