VinFast Auto came into this Q2 2026 earnings print as a high‑growth electric vehicle story with a fragile balance sheet and a premium valuation. The stock had already fallen over the past month and then dropped another 7.1% today to $2.90, as investors reacted to headline losses.
The core surprise sits on profitability. Revenue from continuing operations reached about $1.2b, yet the carmaker still reported a loss from continuing operations of roughly $1.2b and a very weak gross margin. For an EV manufacturer priced above peers on P/S, that gap between growth and profitability is what the market is now repricing.

Supporters argue that VinFast Auto’s new model and ecosystem should steadily fix unit economics over time.
"Deployment of the new common vehicle platform and zonal EE architecture, covering an expected 70% to 80% of Asia volumes in 2026, should significantly lower bill of materials and labor costs per unit and drive structural improvement in gross margin."
Q2 shows part of that story playing out. Platform rollouts and volume growth in both 4 wheelers and 2 wheelers are real milestones. Yet gross margin from continuing operations stayed deeply negative at 62.8% and still negative 28.7% even excluding one off programs, so the promised cost relief has not translated into visible margin repair yet.

The harsher view argues that VinFast Auto is pouring money into factories, R&D and green mobility infrastructure without a clear line of sight to better earnings.
"Management is prioritizing top line growth over cost rationalization. With gross margin at a 56.2% loss in Q3 2025 on a reported basis and adjusted EBITDA margin at an 80.2% loss, an extended period of volume-led growth without pricing power or cost efficiency gains could delay any improvement in earnings and free cash flow."
Q2 2026 results lean toward that worry. Deliveries and revenue moved up strongly yet gross margin from continuing operations still sat at a 62.8% loss, and even the cleaner 28.7% loss metric showed limited unit cost progress. Adjusted EBITDA losses deepened to roughly US$1.1b, or US$678m on an underlying basis, which signals operating leverage is not yet visible. Large net losses from continuing operations near US$1.2b reinforce that heavy investment and ecosystem build out are still overwhelming scale benefits.
VinFast Auto reveals how strong reported revenue alongside sizable losses can complicate any reading of earnings power. The real opportunity is spotting stocks that could be undervalued before price better reflects what the business delivers.
