X-Energy Expands Nuclear Pipeline With New Indiana Reactor Proposal

X-Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:XE) shares are trading higher on Monday after the company signed a joint development agreement with American Electric Power (NASDAQ:AEP) to assess a proposed 960-megawatt small modular reactor (SMR) project in Sullivan County, Indiana.

The plan calls for a 12-unit Xe-100 plant near the former Breed Generating Station, repurposing an AEP-owned site to deliver reliable, low-carbon power.

Amazon To Fund Indiana Project Development

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) will fund certain development activities of the project.

The Indiana proposal is the second grid-scale project under Amazon and X-energy’s collaboration, which aims to add more than 5 gigawatts of nuclear capacity to the U.S. power grid by 2039.

It follows the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington state.

The proposed plant would combine AEP’s nuclear operating experience, Amazon’s development funding and X-energy’s reactor technology.

Xe-100 Technology Expands X-Energy’s Project Pipeline

X-energy’s Xe-100 reactor generates 80 megawatts of electricity, uses helium for cooling and relies on TRISO fuel designed to withstand extreme temperatures. Its compact design could allow plants to be built closer to energy demand.

The Indiana proposal would be X-energy’s third announced U.S. Xe-100 project and fourth worldwide, adding to its 11.5-gigawatt commercial pipeline.

The company’s first project, a proposed four-reactor facility at Dow’s Texas Gulf Coast manufacturing site, is nearing the end of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s construction permit review.

AEP CEO Bill Fehrman said the project could help meet rising power demand while maintaining affordability, with financial safeguards in place.

X-energy CEO J. Clay Sell said the partnership combines the companies’ expertise to deliver reliable, low-carbon power for Indiana’s future.

What X-Energy (XE) Does: Xe-100 SMR And TRISO-X Fuel

X-Energy Inc operates as a designer of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) and nuclear fuel technologies, with the Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor and TRISO-X particle fuel aimed at grid power, industrial facilities, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The Indiana proposal matters because it frames X-Energy less as a concept story and more as a repeatable deployment pipeline: a 12-unit, 960 MW site tied to a utility partner and backed by development capital from Amazon. For the stock, that kind of “project stack” can help sentiment, but the long-term chart suggests investors still want clearer proof points on execution and timelines.
