Workday (WDAY) shares are slipping on Friday after KeyBanc questioned how quickly the firm’s artificial intelligence (AI) investments would deliver meaningful revenue. Analyst Jason Celino downgraded the enterprise software company to “Sector Weight.”
Note that Workday stock has been in a sharp uptrend in recent months, currently trading some 68% above its price in late June.
Celino recommends caution despite encouraging feedback from Workday Rising. In his research report, the analyst admitted that customers, partners, and employees sounded more optimistic than he had anticipated but said enthusiasm alone does not establish when new products will materially lift revenue.
KeyBanc acknowledged that Workday’s aggressive AI investments could eventually help it exceed its reiterated fiscal 2028 targets. But its internal checks and company disclosures suggest material contributions remain early stage. For investors, that means an uncertain wait between spending on new capabilities and seeing the financial benefits.
All in all, KeyBanc’s downgrade of Workday shares reflects “insufficient evidence” of a near-term acceleration, even as it recognizes the technology’s longer-term potential.
Celino’s second concern involves where customers direct their technology dollars. The analyst believes human resources IT budgets could receive lower priority as businesses fund more immediate AI initiatives across their broader operations. That creates a potential obstacle for a company whose applications serve HR and finance departments.
Simply put, the rising corporate interest in AI may not translate directly into stronger demand for Workday. Customers could prioritize other projects, limiting how quickly that enthusiasm benefits its business.
WDAY shares slipped through their 50-day moving average (MA) today, signaling that bears are attempting to take back control of the near term.
Other Wall Street analysts remain bullish on what the future holds for WDAY stock. According to Barchart, the consensus rating on Workday sits at “Moderate Buy,” with the mean price target of about $208 indicating potential upside of nearly 10% from here.
