YouGov (AIM:YOU) Stock Revenue Growth Masks A Sharp Profit Squeeze

语音播报

YouGov stock closed at £2.94 on Wednesday, barely changed over the past month, even as the latest results landed with a clear sting. The headline is not the top line. The real story is a sharp profit squeeze, with trailing net profit margin sitting at 1.4% compared with 3.4% a year earlier.

Short term traders are reacting to a data and analytics business that still grows revenue but converts far less of it into earnings. Long term holders now have to weigh that thinner margin profile against a valuation that already prices the shares on a P/E of 60.4x.

Is YouGov on a path to earnings recovery that justifies a 60.4x P/E, or is the stock paying today for profits that may not arrive? See how the current share price lines up against detailed cash flow assumptions, peer multiples, and implied upside in the valuation analysis for YouGov

YouGov’s Platform Promise Meets Mixed Delivery

Bulls argue YouGov’s shift to an AI powered data platform should already be laying the groundwork for better operating leverage and cleaner recurring revenue. Parts of the latest year support that idea. Data Products margin improved, cash conversion moved to 76%, and management has now logged a 16th consecutive year of revenue growth, all while keeping net debt to EBITDA at about 1.7x and starting a £15m buyback.

Other milestones are still work in progress. Group net profit margin sits at 1.4%, well behind the narrative of a high margin software style platform, and Shopper remains a drag that still needs a strategic outcome. Guidance for FY27 adjusted operating profit of £58m to £61m and a targeted 350 bps of margin uplift from the Value Delivery Plan outline a path that fits the bullish story, but delivery will depend on execution over the next 12 to 24 months.

YouGov Bears Focus On Margins, Not Just Growth

The harshest critics say YouGov is a structurally low margin pollster facing rising panel costs, tougher data rules and AI driven substitution, so any revenue grind will struggle to turn into meaningful earnings. This set of numbers gives that view some backing. Group net profit sits at £5.7m on £396.6m of sales, leaving a 1.4% net margin that looks thin for a data platform story and well below last year’s 3.4%. Shopper is still described as under review, with ongoing investment and no clear end date, which keeps a loss making unit inside the perimeter for longer.

On the other hand, cash conversion at 76%, a 16 year revenue growth streak and firmer Data Products margin all argue against a simple “business model broken” claim. The bear case on profitability looks validated. The more existential bear case on panel relevance and data access is not proven by these figures.

After a year where YouGov’s profit margin thinned and interest costs are less comfortably covered, it is worth asking if these are isolated pressure points or early signs of deeper balance sheet strain. Review our independent risk analysis for YouGov which shows 2 important warning signs
