Missed Natera's 137% Gain? Here's What Investors Got Right

If you only read the headlines about tighter US and European diagnostic rules, Natera might have looked like a regulatory accident waiting to happen. Holding Natera over the past year would have returned 136.7%, including dividends. If you had been weighing that decision back in October 2025, how should you have judged a business facing both ambitious AI-fuelled growth plans and mounting oversight that threatened to choke exactly those ambitions?

On Simply Wall St, a Narrative is an investor's thesis written down: the reasoning, plus the numbers it rests on. Run those numbers and you get an estimated Fair Value.

This theme extends beyond Natera. See which of 34 healthcare AI stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Argument You Would Have Been Weighing On Natera

The shares cost US$173 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Natera then had to choose between two very different stories that both sounded reasonable.

On the optimistic side, the bullish Narrative put Fair Value at US$194, or 12% above the start price. This view hinged on revenue growing 15.2% a year and profit margins improving to 3.7% over three years.

The bearish view saw Fair Value at US$115, or 33% below the start price. It focused on tightening US and European regulation as a key risk and assumed 14.2% annual revenue growth with margins moving up to 16.3% and a future P/E of 45.5x.

What The Evidence Did To The Natera Argument

Natera secured multiple regulatory wins for Signatera, including FDA approval as a blood based companion diagnostic in muscle invasive bladder cancer and EU IVDR Class C certification. These developments backed the optimistic thesis around broader clinical adoption. At the same time, Q2 2026 results showed revenue at US$752.8 million and a narrower loss, with net margin still at -8.9%, so the profitability targets in both cases remained unproven. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The lesson for readers is clear. When a story leans on regulatory expansion and margin improvement, track concrete approvals and reported net margin side by side. Future promise only earns its keep if each quarterly filing steadily moves that profitability line toward the level the original Narrative assumed.

What Natera's Run To US$401 Already Prices In

Natera now trades at US$401, after a 136.7% gain over the past year. The selected Narrative puts Fair Value below that level, arguing that today’s quote bakes in rich expectations for minimal residual disease adoption and oncology volumes.

The Narrative’s key question for a buyer at this price is whether Natera can keep expanding MRD demand and reimbursement fast enough while absorbing tighter regulation, patient data scrutiny, and rising competitive pressure without squeezing long term profitability.

"Natera is likely to face significant headwinds from tightening regulatory scrutiny and evolving healthcare policies in the US and Europe, which could delay new product approvals, increase compliance costs, and restrict reimbursement for existing and upcoming tests, putting long-term revenue growth at risk. Heightening concerns and new regulations around patient data privacy and genomic data usage are expected to add substantial operational complexity and could limit the company's ability to scale AI-driven innovation and product development, hampering both competitive differentiation and future earnings."

One Step Beyond Natera

Natera leans on diagnostics and risk detection. Your next question is what happens after a high risk result arrives.

People flagged as high risk for disease often face tough treatment decisions. Many then look for therapies that directly address weight, blood sugar and related complications.

Another healthcare group focuses squarely on those problems. It develops medicines for diabetes, obesity and several serious chronic conditions.

That focus turns test results into possible treatment paths. As more patients seek medical help earlier, the role of such drug makers could quietly become more consequential.
