Nike (NKE) Stock Slides As China Weakness Deepens Premium Reset

语音播报

NIKE holders woke up to a red screen. The stock dropped about 4% today, extending a three month slide of roughly 23%, even though the latest quarter delivered revenue of US$11.2b and earnings per share of about US$0.48 that broadly lined up with guidance.

The real shock is not this quarter. Management now expects full year sales to decline at a high single digit rate and has flagged an even sharper near term hit to profit, as the company pulls back volume in Sportswear, Jordan and China in order to protect its brand and pricing power over the coming years.

Is NIKE now a genuine bargain after the slide, or just a stock with soft growth expectations and a premium P/E that has not fully reset? Compare the current share price against our valuation analysis for NIKE

Nike’s Premium Reset: Early Wins, Clear Trade Offs

Bulls argue Nike can revive growth by leaning into premium product, cleaner channels and higher quality sales. Q1 gives partial proof. Gross margin ticked up to 42.8% while revenue declined 4.3%, which fits the idea that the business is trading volume for healthier pricing and mix rather than chasing every dollar of demand.

The performance pivot is also visible. Management called out high single digit growth across the sport portfolio, with double digit gains in Running, Football, Tennis, Golf and North America Basketball. That is exactly where the turnaround playbook said capital would go.

Other pieces of the bullish story are still only in groundwork phase. The China “digital cleanup,” Sportswear segmentation and Jordan supply cuts are in place, but they are currently dragging the top line rather than yet proving they can rebuild full price demand at scale.

Compare that margin story with how the Street is reacting to NIKE after a 3.6% drop on the day and a softer full year sales outlook. See the consensus price target analysis for NIKE to check whether analysts think this premium reset still supports the current valuation.

Nike Bears See Execution Gaps, Not Just Weak Demand

The bearish story says Nike faces a messy reset where China, supply chain shifts and fading brand heat keep earnings under pressure for years. This quarter largely lines up with that concern. Greater China revenue fell 26% and management openly guided to conditions in that region getting worse for the rest of FY27 as the digital cleanup ramps. That is a clear miss versus any hope that distribution cuts would be quickly offset by healthier demand.

Bears also worry that fixing sourcing and channels will be costly and slow. Pace is already generating some savings, yet EBIT is guided to fall faster than revenue and most of the US$2.5b benefit sits in FY29 to FY30. Sportswear and Jordan are shrinking by design, and the high single digit growth in performance categories is not yet large enough to stabilize the whole portfolio. The reset is real, but so is the earnings drag it brings.
