Insiders who purchased AU$388.0k worth of Chilwa Minerals Limited (ASX:CHW) shares over the past year recouped some of their losses after price gained 10% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at AU$49k since the time of purchase.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
The Non-Executive Independent Director Jose Martins made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$230k worth of shares at a price of AU$1.20 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of AU$0.95. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.
