What You Can Take From Rakuten Group's 32% Fall And It Was Not Revenue

If you had backed the bullish Rakuten Group case on mobile synergies and Agentic AI at the start of 2026, the payoff so far has been painful. For Rakuten Group shareholders, the loss from the start of the year was 32.0%, including dividends. Analysts on both sides expected revenue growth, margin improvement and a higher P/E multiple by 2028. So what did those original expectations miss about mobile losses, Japan reliance and execution risk that explains this gap?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

This theme extends beyond Rakuten Group. See which of 19 cryptocurrency and blockchain stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Rakuten Group Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost ¥1,021 at the start, and anyone looking at Rakuten Group then was really choosing between two competing stories about where the business could head next.

On the bullish side, the Agentic AI and mobile expansion thesis pointed to a Fair Value of ¥1,200, framed as 18% above the start price. Supporters expected annual revenue growth of 10.6% and a shift from a loss-making margin of 8.8% to a 4.4% profit margin by 2028.

The more cautious case saw Fair Value at ¥968, about 5% below the start price. That view still assumed 7.5% yearly revenue growth and a 3.0% profit margin, but highlighted ongoing mobile segment profitability risk and financial pressures linked to capital needs and refinancing.

What The Results Changed For The Rakuten Group Thesis

Rakuten Group moved from a net loss of ¥50,964 million in Q2 2025 to net income of ¥7,707 million in Q2 2026, with net margin shifting from a loss of 8.5% to a 1.2% profit. Revenue over the same period was ¥596,369 million and ¥665,469 million. That tilt toward profitability backed the bullish margin story, although the low single digit margin kept the outcome mixed rather than settled.

The lesson is simple. When an investment case leans heavily on margin repair, track net income and net margin in every earnings release and ask whether the direction and pace still line up with the original forecast.

What You Are Paying For In Rakuten Group Today

Rakuten Group now trades at ¥683 after a 32.0% loss from the start of the year, while the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits above that market level. The argument leans on AI, mobile and cloud lifting profitability more than the P/E multiple.

For that higher figure to line up, a buyer today would need to believe AI-driven cost savings and ecosystem cross-selling translate into the profit margins analysts describe.

"AI-driven operational efficiencies, targeting a 31% reduction in customer support costs, are anticipated to improve net margins by boosting profitability across Rakuten's operational segments. Expansion into international markets and the collection of rich data from over a billion members worldwide are expected to enhance revenue streams and provide competitive advantages in personalization and customer retention."

Rakuten Group And Resource Demand

Rakuten Group is chasing data rich digital engagement, built on software, networks and cloud capacity.

Step sideways and there is a different requirement. The world still needs raw material to make wires, panels and batteries work.

One miner is trying to meet that need with focused silver and gold output. It develops deposits, advances mine projects and scales processing capacity.

Clean energy build outs, electronics and bullion buyers all depend on steady metal supply.

If those end markets stay hungry, this producer’s role could matter more over time.
