Insiders Of Meridian Mining Retain US$4.7m Of Investment Selling At Higher Prices

While Meridian Mining Plc (TSE:MNO) shareholders have had a good week with the stock up 24%, they shouldn't let their guards down. Even though stock prices were relatively low, insiders elected to sell US$4.7m worth of stock in the last year, which could indicate some expected downturn.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Meridian Mining

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Henry Maxey, sold CA$4.7m worth of shares at a price of CA$1.18 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of CA$2.32. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 9.6% of Henry Maxey's holding. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Henry Maxey.

Does Meridian Mining Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Meridian Mining insiders own about CA$107m worth of shares. That equates to 9.4% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Meridian Mining Insiders?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Meridian Mining shares in the last quarter.
