Whilst it may not be a huge deal, we thought it was good to see that the RGC Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:RGCO) Independent Chairman of the Board, John Williamson, recently bought US$57k worth of stock, for US$20.93 per share. Although the purchase is not a big one, increasing their shareholding by only 1.5%, it can be interpreted as a good sign.
Notably, that recent purchase by John Williamson is the biggest insider purchase of RGC Resources shares that we've seen in the last year. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$21.28. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. If someone buys shares at well below current prices, it's a good sign on balance, but keep in mind they may no longer see value. Happily, the RGC Resources insiders decided to buy shares at close to current prices.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 20% of RGC Resources shares, worth about US$45m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
The recent insider purchases are heartening. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. Insiders likely see value in RGC Resources shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company).
