Those following along with SSY Group Limited (HKG:2005) will no doubt be intrigued by the recent purchase of shares by Jiguang Qu, Executive Chairman & CEO of the company, who spent a stonking HK$8.4m on stock at an average price of HK$2.62. While that only increased their holding size by 1.1%, it is still a big swing by our standards.
Notably, that recent purchase by Jiguang Qu is the biggest insider purchase of SSY Group shares that we've seen in the last year. That implies that an insider found the current price of HK$2.75 per share to be enticing. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. Happily, the SSY Group insider decided to buy shares at close to current prices. Jiguang Qu was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. SSY Group insiders own about HK$866m worth of shares (which is 11% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence.
