07:41 AM EDT, 09/17/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Anglo American's statement) The European Commission sent a statement of objections for the proposed sale of Anglo American's (AAL.L, AGL.JO) Brazilian nickel business to Hong Kong-listed mining and metals company MMG. Following an in-depth investigation, the European Union's executive body on Wednesday noted preliminary concerns that MMG could divert the businesses' low-carbon ferronickel supply away from European stainless steel producers and direct it to its affiliated producers. It added that supply diversion and the limited alternative supply sources could affect the prices of low-carbon ferronickel and stainless steel production in the European Economic Area. The Commission noted that the statement of objections does not prejudge the result of its investigation. MMG may examine the statement and reply or request a hearing. In an emailed statement to MT Newswires, Anglo American said it has provided the Commission with independent evidence that the deal would not raise competition concerns. "The EC's assessment seems to have ignored the commercial realities of the market and the significant expansion of ferronickel (FeNi) supply that has actually taken place over the last 12 months," Anglo noted, adding that it will continue engaging with the European Commission on the transaction. MMG did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
