According to people familiar with the matter, the UAE's Abu Dhabi National Oil Company ADNOC has purchased millions of barrels of discounted crude oil from the Iraqi state-owned oil company. Two Iraqi energy sources said that the UAE's state-owned enterprise, through its trade department, became the largest buyer of Iraqi crude oil in August and September, strongly supporting Iraqi exports, which were severely hampered in the early stages of the war. According to an Iraqi source, ADNOC purchased 32 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil at a discounted price of 24.90 to 27 US dollars per barrel in August; in September, it also purchased an additional 40 million barrels, including 10 million barrels purchased at a discounted price of 18 US dollars per barrel and 30 million barrels purchased at a discounted price of 25 US dollars per barrel. A second Iraqi source said that although SOMO, the Iraqi national oil marketing organization, distributed 32 million barrels of crude oil to ADNOC in August, ADNOC actually only shipped 20 million barrels due to export restrictions and Basra Oil's inability to ensure sufficient crude oil supply. The source said ADNOC had shipped 14 million barrels of crude oil from Iraq as of September.
