The recent 24% drop in Gudou Holdings Limited's (HKG:8308) stock could come as a blow to insiders who purchased CN¥17.4m worth of stock at an average buy price of CN¥0.061 over the past 12 months. Insiders invest with the hopes of seeing their money grow in value over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth CN¥9.03m, which is not what they expected.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Gudou Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when insider Zhao Ping Han bought HK$6.5m worth of shares at a price of HK$0.06 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than HK$0.032 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

While Gudou Holdings insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Gudou Holdings insiders own 51% of the company, worth about HK$23m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
