Maye Musk Recounts 'Strange' Experience With Tesla's Cybercab Without a Steering Wheel And Pedals in 2024 Amid Austin Rollout: 'It Will Free Up…'
While Tesla Inc.‘s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Cybercab has grabbed the headlines, with CEO Elon Musk touting it as the beginning of the “golden era” in transportation, his mother, Maye Musk, shared her experience riding the driverless vehicle for the first time back in 2024.
‘Strange’ Experience
In a post on X on Thursday, Musk shared an old video of her and her daughter, Tosca Musk‘s ride in the early iteration of Cybercab. “In 2024, @ToscaMusk and I tried out the Cybercab,” Musk shared.
She recounted that the vehicle seemed strange. “It really is strange not to have a steering wheel nor pedals,” she said. “It will free up a lot of space for my dogs,” she said, also pointing to the “huge” trunk on the Cybercab.
In the past, Musk also shared her experience of being in a Tesla Cybertruck, saying that people needed to ride in a Cybertruck to appreciate its comfort. “The suspension is great and it’s soundproof. Also bulletproof,” she said in a post on X back in July.
Notably, Tesla recently hiked the prices of the Cybertruck in the U.S., with the electric pickup truck’s base trim now available for $74,990. The Cybertruck, despite its social media hype, has failed to translate the interest into sales.
Gene Munster, Ross Gerber Back Cybercab
Investor Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management expressed bullish sentiments about the Cybercab, saying that he expects the company to deploy roughly 300 units of the Cybercab in Austin by the end of the month. He also said that the launch illustrates that Musk is no longer “paranoid” about Robotaxi incidents.
Investor Ross Gerber of Gerber Kawasaki touted the Cybercab as the first-ever “physical AI EV” and said that he was looking forward to seeing how its rollout progresses. Tesla confirmed that the Cybercab Robotaxis will be open to the public on Friday in Austin at 5 p.m. Central.
Rare-Earth-Free Motor
Musk also hailed the Cybercab’s rare-earth-free electric motor, saying that achieving the milestone with the Cybercab was “extremely hard,” but that the EV had not lost any range despite the lack of rare-earth materials. Meanwhile, investor Gary Black of The Future Fund LLC remained skeptical of the Cybercab rollout.
