It is usually uneventful when a single insider buys stock. However, When quite a few insiders buy shares, as it happened in Virco Mfg. Corporation's (NASDAQ:VIRC) case, it's fantastic news for shareholders.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by President & Director Douglas Virtue for US$98k worth of shares, at about US$6.09 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of US$6.52 per share to be enticing. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.

It appears that Virco Mfg insiders own 34% of the company, worth about US$32m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Virco Mfg we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future.
