Shares of USA Rare Earth Inc. (NASDAQ:USAR) are surging Friday afternoon, joining a broad rally across critical metal and mineral processing equities.
The sector gained strong momentum Friday after the U.S. Department of Energy announced $500 million in funding for seven selected projects. The awards target the expansion of domestic critical mineral and material processing, battery manufacturing and recycling capacity.
This third round of federal funding directly aligns with President Trump’s “Unleashing American Energy” executive order. The directive prioritizes domestic supply chain security by backing onshore non-fuel mineral processors and critical metal producers.
Investors are positioning in domestic infrastructure developers like USA Rare Earth Friday as expanding federal backing accelerates the commercial scale-up of rare earth elements, lithium and battery-grade materials.
From a trend perspective, USAR is trading 11.9% above its 20-day SMA ($17.30) and 4.3% above its 50-day SMA ($18.56), which signals the near-term rebound is still intact. The longer-term picture is more mixed, with the stock trading 6.3% below its 100-day SMA ($20.67) even as it sits 1.2% above its 200-day SMA ($19.14).
For momentum, MACD is the cleaner read right now: it’s above its signal line with a positive histogram, which points to improving upside pressure versus the prior downswing. In plain terms, when MACD is above its signal line, it suggests momentum is turning up even if the bigger trend hasn’t fully repaired.
The moving-average structure still carries baggage from the death cross in August (50-day SMA below the 200-day SMA), and the 20-day SMA remains below the 50-day SMA, which can cap follow-through rallies. Traders will often treat that as a "prove it" phase where price needs to keep building higher lows to flip the intermediate trend.
USAR Stock Price Activity: USA Rare Earth shares were up 13.21% at $19.37 at the time of publication on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
