Intuitive Machines (LUNR) Stock Can Backlog Momentum Outrun Rising Losses?

Intuitive Machines stock jumped 8.3% to US$19.01 today, yet the real story sits in the tug of war between excitement and execution risk. The market is cheering a quarter where revenue reached US$206.2m and gross profit swung firmly into positive territory. That enthusiasm leans hard on the promise of a US$1.8b backlog and management’s reaffirmed target for positive adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation this year. The question for you is whether this optimism fairly prices the balance between rapid top line growth and an ongoing loss making profile.

Intuitive Machines bull case hinges on backlog and EBITDA

The upbeat story on Intuitive Machines says a large, diversified backlog plus the shift to recurring data services will turn today’s growth into more predictable, higher margin revenue and positive adjusted EBITDA. Q2 supports parts of that. Revenue reached US$206.2m and gross profit turned positive at US$36m, which backs the claim that scale and mix are improving unit economics. Backlog reached US$1.8b with US$1.7b of bookings year to date and management expects roughly 25% to 30% of that backlog to turn into 2026 revenue. The reaffirmed US$900m to US$1.0b revenue target and full year positive adjusted EBITDA guidance show management still sees the profitability milestone as achievable. The recurring piece is early though. Lunar data contracts are still small and Altus data relay services only ramp after IM‑3 and the 2028 launches, so the recurring pillar is not yet proven at scale.

Bear case on losses, cash burn and dilution risk

The cautious view argues that Intuitive Machines carries heavy execution risk, persistent losses and funding pressure that could dilute shareholders if anything slips. Q2 does validate some of that concern. Net loss widened to US$46.6m even as revenue grew sharply, and adjusted EBITDA remained a loss of US$14m despite the improvement. Operating cash outflow of US$60m and total cash deployment of US$84m show that building out satellites, lunar missions and ground assets is still consuming significant cash. Management is clear that upfront investment in inventory, capacity and ground segment upgrades is deliberate, but it raises the bar for backlog conversion. The reaffirmed guidance leans on contract definitization and timely revenue recognition. Any delay in turning awards and indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contracts into cash paying programs would make the current capital structure and prior equity raises a more central risk for you to monitor.

After widening losses and recent shareholder dilution, are these just early growing pains, or part of a deeper structural issue? Review the risk analysis for Intuitive Machines which shows 4 important warning signs.
