SouthState Bank (SSB) Stock Looks Cheap, But Can Margins Hold

SouthState Bank stock barely flinched after earnings. The share price ticked down around 0.2% to about US$105, even as the quarterly report put a different story on the table. Return on tangible common equity of 17.6% and net profit margins of 35.5% over the last twelve months speak to a bank still producing solid profitability while trading on a P/E of roughly 10.7x and at a sizeable gap to one discounted cash flow estimate of fair value.

For investors thinking beyond this week’s tiny move, the real question is how long that gap and that profitability profile can coexist.

Is SouthState Bank trading at a genuine discount, or does the P/E just look cheap next to recent margins? Compare the market price with our intrinsic value work in the valuation analysis for SouthState Bank.

SouthState bull case leans on profitable growth

The optimistic view is that SouthState can blend high quality growth, tight credit and capital returns into a durable high return franchise. Q2 ticks several of those boxes. Return on tangible common equity of 17.6% and a 35.5% net margin align with that high return story. Loans grew 8% year on year with $1.35b added in the quarter, helped by record production and a growing pipeline from new commercial hires. Margins look controlled. Net interest margin was 3.78%, only 1 bps lower than Q1 and inside the 3.75% to 3.80% guidance, while deposit costs held at 1.76% and noninterest bearing balances increased.

Credit is still a support for the bull case. Net charge offs were 6 bps and nonperforming assets fell 14% quarter on quarter, even as the allowance for credit losses continued to drift down.

Bear case focuses on margin, CRE and payout risks

The cautious view argues that SouthState is leaning on late cycle earnings, with margin and credit eventually pressuring returns. Q2 gives bears less near term support on credit. Net charge offs stayed at 6 bps and classified loans fell, while provisioning of US$16m mainly followed loan growth. Management is still weighting downside economic scenarios heavily at 40%. That shows ongoing concern, but not current stress. Margin worries are not fully laid to rest. Net interest margin is already at the top of the 3.75% to 3.80% range and management only expects stability if rates are flat, while accretion is fading and core deposit costs are expected to rise modestly.

Capital return is another watchpoint. The 80% year to date payout including buybacks is above the 40% to 60% target and management has signalled a slower repurchase pace to protect capital ratios.

With SouthState Bank still paying out a high share of earnings and planning only modest deposit cost increases, you should verify how resilient its capital and liquidity really look. Check the full financial health analysis of SouthState Bank stock.
