IGM Financial (TSX:IGM) Stock Faces Fee Pressure Despite Diversified Growth

语音播报

IGM Financial heads into the post earnings trade with its stock at CA$87.16 and up double digits over the past quarter. The market has already been rewarding the story. The headline from this quarter is not the share price. It is the pressure building inside the income statement as quarterly basic earnings per share slipped to CA$1.13 and net inflows softened from earlier in the year.

For a wealth and asset manager that lives on fees, the real question now is how durable those margins look over the next few years as fee rates and mix shift. The rest of the earnings tells that story.

IGM bullish story of diversified growth on trial

Bulls argue that IGM Financial is turning into a more diversified, fee resilient wealth platform, not just a traditional Canadian mutual fund manager. Q2 gives that claim some real support. Adjusted EPS grew 32% year on year to CA$1.41 while AUM&A reached CA$622b, with IG Wealth and Mackenzie together now driving about 75% of earnings and both showing positive net flows. IG Wealth delivered a record CA$174.7m earnings quarter and eight straight quarters of positive flows, which directly backs the idea of a durable, advice-led franchise.

On the diversification side, Wealthsimple AUA grew to CA$155.6b and Rockefeller and Northleaf added scale. That shows the growth pillars outside traditional mutual funds are contributing. The one check on the bull case is fee rate pressure at both IG Wealth and Mackenzie, which means margin durability still has to be earned, not assumed.

Bear case on fee pressure and disruption tested

Bears worry IGM Financial is too exposed to fee compression, traditional advisors and the Canadian mutual fund market. Q2 does not remove these concerns but it does complicate them. Management explicitly flagged lower advisory fee rates at IG Wealth and declining third-party fee rates at Mackenzie, with guidance for further modest compression next quarter. That speaks directly to the pricing pressure fear.

However, the feared collapse in flows into traditional advice channels is not showing up yet. IG Wealth posted eight consecutive quarters of positive net flows and Mackenzie recorded its best Q2 net sales in five years, including institutional mandates that broaden the client mix. Wealthsimple’s growth and the Northleaf consolidation show that digital and private market platforms are inside the IGM perimeter rather than only competing against it. The disruption risk is still present, but Q2 shows a company leaning into it rather than being overrun.
