Lagardere (ENXTPA:MMB) Stock Price Hints At Value Despite Thin Margins

Lagardere’s stock closed at €18.4 after a slightly positive week and a softer month, even as the earnings story pointed investors toward a different question. Is this a slow growth grind that justifies caution, or a misunderstood cash generator hiding in plain sight?

The headline this time is not revenue or earnings per share. It is balance sheet pressure versus valuation. Net profit margin sits around 2.2% and net debt near €1.7b, yet the P/E of 12.5x and a share price far below an internal cash flow estimate are what the market is really voting on today.

Love that Lagardere looks inexpensive on a 12.5x P/E but uneasy about net debt of about €1.7b sitting on a thin 2.2% net margin. You can look at stocks that pair stronger balance sheets with solid fundamentals in our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (422 results)

Lagardere bull case pinned on cash and mix

Bulls argue Lagardere is a resilient cash engine, with Travel Retail recovery, premiumization and digital publishing quietly lifting quality of earnings while debt comes down in the background. H1 results give that view some traction. Group revenue reached €4.5b with EBITA of about €218m and EBITDA higher on a like for like basis. Net cash flow from operations improved 50% to €84m and rolling 12 month net debt declined by more than €200m to about €1.7b. Travel Retail revenue of roughly €3b with broadly stable EBITA margin, despite sharp pressure in the Middle East and the wind down in China, supports the resilience story. Publishing grew slightly, helped by digital audio growth above 20% in France and solid backlist sales. Cost controls at Prisma and Lagardere Live also kept EBITDA positive, which supports the narrative of better cash conversion across the group.

Debt, volatility and Travel Retail temper optimism

Bears focus on thin profitability, elevated leverage and exposure to volatile Travel Retail. H1 numbers do not dismiss those worries. Net profit margin over the last 12 months is about 2.2% while net debt still sits around €1.7b. That leaves limited room for error if trading softens. Travel Retail remains exposed. Revenue in the Middle East declined 28% in H1 and 39% in Q2. China store closures cut revenue by about 40% versus the prior year and the full exit is only expected by end 2026. Prisma Media revenue fell about 25% as print and digital ads weakened. Group EBITDA is holding up, but growth in cash flow still leans on disposals, court proceeds and restructuring. With the share price roughly flat over 3 months and slightly down over 3 and 12 month windows, the market reaction suggests the deleveraging story is not yet decisive.
