Western Digital Corp (NASDAQ:WDC) stock is surging on Wednesday, primarily driven by strong demand for high-capacity hard drives, expectations of tighter global supply and a sector-wide snapback following recent profit-taking in the memory industry. Nasdaq futures are down 0.02% while S&P 500 futures have shed 0.02%.
The upward movement in Western Digital stock follows a sharp decline on Tuesday, when the stock dropped 12% as the AI memory trade unwound. That wave dragged down major peers, including Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU), which fell 12.08% and SK Hynix Inc (NASDAQ:SKHY), which dropped 7.47%.
The broader semiconductor sector faced heavy selling after South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index plummeted 5.99% on Wednesday. The KOSPI extended a historic two-day decline of over 12.6%. The drop followed SK Hynix missing operating profit forecasts, posting 60.54 trillion KRW ($41.62 billion) against an LSEG SmartEstimate of 64 trillion KRW ($43.99 billion).
From a trend perspective, WDC is still in a longer-term uptrend, holding 46.4% above its 200-day SMA ($325.91) and 4.5% above its 100-day SMA ($456.26). But the intermediate trend has cooled, with the stock trading 11.7% below its 20-day SMA ($540.27) and 14.6% below its 50-day SMA ($558.43), which keeps rallies from feeling "clean" until those averages are reclaimed.
MACD is the better momentum lens right now: it’s below its signal line and the histogram is negative, which points to fading upside pressure versus the prior upswing unless buyers can rebuild momentum. That lines up with the bearish 20-day SMA below the 50-day SMA crossover, even as the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day SMA—still a constructive longer-term backdrop.
The countdown is on: Western Digital is set to report earnings on August 5.
WDC Stock Price Activity: Western Digital shares were up 2.68% at $475.92 during premarket trading on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
