Elon Musk late Thursday highlighted Neuralink’s progress toward restoring mobility, sharing a demonstration of physically impaired trial participants controlling powered wheelchairs solely through thought.

Neuralink Shows Thought-Controlled Wheelchair Navigation Progress

"Neuralink helping those who have lost their mind to body connection," Musk wrote on X, quoting a company post showing its brain-computer interface moving beyond screens and into navigation.

Neuralink said its N1 implant uses 1,024 electrodes in the motor cortex to detect neural activity linked to intended movement. A machine-learning model translates those signals into cursor commands that operate a powered wheelchair through a live camera feed.

The video showed participants moving forward and backward, steering and adjusting their seats while navigating indoor rooms and outdoor paths. Neuralink said an automatic return-to-center feature slows and stops the chair when a user loses focus.

Wheelchair Tests Extend Earlier Computer Control

The demonstration extends technology first designed to let people with paralysis control computers. Musk branded the device "Telepathy" before Neuralink implanted it in Noland Arbaugh, the first PRIME Study participant, in January 2024. Arbaugh later played chess, browsed online and posted on X through thought control.

What is new is not the implant but the task: participants are using decoded brain signals to move through surroundings rather than manipulate digital interfaces.

The PRIME Study remains an early feasibility trial evaluating the N1 implant and Neuralink’s surgical robot in people with severe paralysis. The wheelchair system and implant remain investigational and lack regulatory approval.

Trials Expand As Musk Targets More Uses

Neuralink said in January that it had enrolled 21 people worldwide, reporting no serious device-related adverse events. It plans to increase the next implant from roughly 1,000 to 3,000 electrodes.

Neuralink has broadened its ambitions. Its speech-restoration system received an FDA breakthrough-device designation, while Musk has said the company aims to help people with paralysis "use their hands and walk again".

Musk said in May that Neuralink expected its first Blindsight implant later this year, initially offering limited vision that could eventually become "super, super human vision."
