The board of T&L Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:340570) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₩1500.00 on the 15th of April, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 1.5%, which is fairly typical for the industry.
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Before making this announcement, T&L was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 51.1%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 37% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. The annual payment during the last 4 years was ₩400.00 in 2021, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ₩750.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 17% over that duration. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. T&L has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 30% per annum. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
