EU Regulator OKs Belgium's EUR61 Million Loan for Rail Freight Operator Lineas Group

07:24 AM EST, 12/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission cleared the Belgian government's 61 million-euro rescue loan for Lineas Group after concluding that the financial support is in line with the European Union's state aid rules. The loan aims to address the Belgian rail freight operator's liquidity needs for six months as it faces financial challenges due to a decline in market demand, according to a Monday release. The EU watchdog noted that Belgium is committed to proposing a restructuring plan if the loan is not reimbursed. Meanwhile, the commission said the separate capital injections for Lineas carried out by the Belgian sovereign wealth fund and Lineas shareholder, Argos Wityu, in 2023 and 2024 did not qualify as state aid.
